Some professions are strictly regulated in the EU, notably seven known as “sectoral” professions - doctor, nurse, dentist, midwife, pharmacist, architect, and veterinary surgeon.

There are two categories of profession in the EU, regulated and non-regulated. Regulated means access to the profession, and to practise it, requires possession of qualifications specified in law or other regulatory provisions. Most occupations in the EU are not regulated.
