Commissioner Schmit visits the ETF in the European Year of Skills

European Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights, Nicolas Schmit, visits the European Training Foundation (ETF) in Turin, Italy, on 1 June, for the first time during his mandate. This visit marks a significant occasion for discussions on the EU’s actions in human capital development outside the EU, particularly in relation to the European Year of Skills, and addressing current geopolitical challenges and developments.

Dr Pilvi Torsti, Director of the European Training Foundation, expressed her anticipation for the Commissioner's visit, stating: "We are pleased to welcome Commissioner Schmit to Turin. This visit provides an excellent opportunity to showcase the ETF’s unique role in human capital development and skills recognition in countries outside the European Union. We look forward to engaging discussions that will further strengthen our impact."

The visit includes a knowledge-sharing event on micro credentials, organised in collaboration with the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (Cedefop) and the Inter-Agency Group on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (IAG-TVET). During the visit, discussions will centre around enhancing learning opportunities, facilitating the recognition of qualifications from third countries, the importance of skills for the digital and green transition and advancing the EU's social and employment agenda. These discussions aim to identify collaborative opportunities and address the challenges associated with skills recognition.

The European Year of Skills aims to emphasise the value of skills and competences, particularly for individuals from third countries. Commissioner Schmit's visit underscores the European Commission's commitment to investing in skills development and promoting social fairness within the EU and beyond.

Background: The European Training Foundation is the EU agency supporting countries surrounding the EU to reform their education, training and labour market systems. It works with partner countries mostly in the context of the EU's enlargement and neighbourhood policies.
