Armenia has experienced several socio-political and economic shocks in recent years, from the 2018 Velvet Revolution, the COVID-19 pandemic and the 44-day conflict with Azerbaijan in 2020 to the military escalations in Nagorno-Karabakh in September 2023 and the consequent displacement of over 115 000 ethnic Armenians.
