How migration, human capital and the labour market interact in Serbia

In 2020, the ETF, together with the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies (wiiw), launched a regional study entitled ‘Migration dynamics from human capital perspective in the Western Balkans’. Its aim was to shed light on the triangular relationships between human capital formation, labour markets and migration, and to determine how the current functioning of education systems and labour markets affects migration in each country.

This report was drafted by Mihail Arandarenko. It is the first of six country reports to be produced within the context of this study and is based on a common analytical framework developed by the ETF and wiiw. The study itself involved analysing existing literature and reports and developed some novel tools to analyse flow and stock data on Serbian migrants, based on available international statistics.
