Skills for the green transition

This month the ETF’s Green Campaign highlights the readiness of education and training systems in the EU’s neighbouring regions to respond to the green challenge.

Evidence from the ETF’s regular policy monitoring and targeted country and sectoral studies, in partnership with partner country stakeholders and other national and international organisations, will be presented on the ETF website, social media channels and events.

We are also presenting the finalists of the ETF’s 2022 Green Skills Awards and highlights from the European Vocational Skills Week 2022 from 16 to 20 May in which they will feature.

Discussions are scheduled with leading experts to examine the patterns of changing skills, brought by obsolete, revolutionised or emerging occupations, and how to meet the skill demands and opportunities arising from institutions and business going green. This transition impacts all sectors from the most traditional agricultural to high-tech and energy sectors.

Specific scientific and technical green skills for certain occupations will be required, but not only. Every individual, at all ages and stages in life, will need transversal skills and competences and general environmental awareness to be able to live and thrive in the green economy. We explore how education and training systems can meet these needs in formal, non-formal and informal settings.

The green transition is a cross-cutting policy issue requiring targeted actions for inclusion, such as for youth, migrants, and women who for many reasons might be excluded from green-growth sectors and green jobs. We are highlighting this month the latest developments to ensure a just and fair green transition for all.

The ETF’s work is devised and delivered in the context of the EU’s policies and external relations priorities in support of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. We are supporting partner countries in the EU’s neighbouring regions to prepare for the green transition through the reform of human capital development systems to drive the shift towards sustainable, clean, carbon-neutral circular economies and just and fair societies.
