Skills for sustainable development

Wprn: WP12-31-10

The ETF Sustainable Development project aims at improving ETF’s assistance to partner countries on the sustainable development dimension in the VET system. ETF work is based on the EU 2020 strategy committing to a sustainable future as an occasion to better integrate sustainability issues in its work with partner countries outside the EU, highlighting the fundamentally transnational nature of sustainability issues. Since 2010, ETF has carried out specific activities to enhance the sustainable development dimension (organisation of expert meeting, drafting of discussion papers on the topic) leading in 2011 to the finalisation of the ETF corporate position paper on sustainable development dimension.
ETF has explored and discussed the dimension of sustainable development in VET together with skills development context within the CIS region. Three pilot countries (Belarus, Kyrgyzstan and Ukraine) have carried out an assessment of sustainable dimension of the VET system focussing, in particular, on 2 aspects: Governmental Support for a “Whole School” Approach to Sustainable Development in VET Schools, and Implementation of the “Whole School” Approach to Learning Sustainability in VET Schools. The findings of three country assessments have been discussed in an expert meeting in Minsk, 15-16/11/2011. ETF support has been requested on how to develop a system of SD indicators for VET, appropriate to the local context, and how to promote sustainable development in the VET system.
Building on a preparatory study carried out in 2011 on the relevance of VET for sustainable development a dissemination conference will be organised in autumn 2012 tentatively in Ukraine in cooperation with the EC (DG EAC) and the hosting country government. The conference aims at proposing policy recommendations for reinforcing sustainable development in VET curricula and delivery.
