Inclusive education key to dialogue and tolerance

In the southeast Turkish town of Şanlıurfa, the European Training Foundation (ETF) and Turkish government are hosting a regional meeting ‘Schools for Inclusive Education in the Western Balkans and Turkey’ from 4 to 6 October 2010.
The ETF Director Ms. Madlen Serban and senior officials from Turkish central and local administrations will welcome more than ninety participants from the region as well as from the European Union and other international organisations.

The main objective of the gathering is to present the European, national and regional good practices in promoting equality and inclusion in vocational education and training.

Social inclusion is about fostering people’s participation in economic, social and cultural life, regardless of their gender, ethnicity, social class or disability. It also involves participation in the decision making, which affects individuals’ lives and access to their fundamental rights.

Education and training can potentially promote respect, tolerance, interethnic dialogue, and non-discrimination to reduce social distances and to create better communities.

In Şanlıurfa, the European, national and regional policymakers, social partners, researchers, and education and training providers will discuss how vocational education and training schools can be used as one of vehicles to remove barriers to social inclusion.

The Western Balkans countries and Turkey are working toward accession to the European Union. Although at different stages, the governments are considering EU tools and instruments as a reference for development of their educational systems.

The reform of education and training in line with the idea of inclusive education in the Western Balkans countries and Turkey is advancing. However, the vocational education and training schools have been slow in becoming places that are able to compensate for the various disadvantages experienced by students and their communities.
