Embracing new technologies in vocational education and training

Smart machines, artificial intelligence, robots -  the future of enterprise is happening now. So how does vocational education and training sector stay modern, connected and up-to-date?

Embracing new technology in education and rethinking outdated learning processes is critical. This is the focus of the New Technologies in Education conference in Serbia.

Organised by the British Council, the UK's international organisation that promotes cultural relations and educational opportunities around the world, the event features more than 120 education, technology and policy experts and leaders from more than 20 countries.

From pre-school through to university and vocational education, the aim of the interactive workshop and fair is to raise awareness of the significance and best practice of using new technologies in education, including VET.

Education practitioners will get ideas on how to become more innovative and to exploit all the possibilities of new technology. Entrepreneurs will get a chance to present their products and services that have the potential to change the education process of future generations.

“The idea is to inform policy, inspire and share good practice,” says European Training Foundation’s Alessandro Brolpito, one of the experts apeaking at the high-level international policy forum, including education ministers from ETF partner countries Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo*.

Alessandro will also present on the topic of digital and online learning in secondary VET in Serbia. Working closely with Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development Serbia, the ETF conducted a case study of digital and online learning in Serbia where 75% of students attend secondary VET schools.

The case study shows that while schools are strongly committed to digital online learning, few have necessary resources to carry through their ambitions. Around one third of teachers are proficient in digital and online learning.

“Digital and online learning has been an influential idea. In order to proceed further in a more systematic and coherent fashion well formulated digital and online governance, reference and assessment models are needed,” the report concludes.

Serbia is one of 29 partner countries that the ETF is working with to improve the capacity to embrace digital online learning in vocational education and training. *This designation is without prejudice to positions on status, and is in line with UNSCR 1244 and the ICJ Opinion on the Kosovo declaration of independence.
